Warning: Emails and a WhatsApp account misusing the name of Jeremy Dennison and Travers Smith LLP

Emails have been sent and a WhatsApp social media account has been set up which misuses the name Jeremy Dennison and Travers Smith LLP.

What is the scam?

Emails have been sent and a WhatsApp account been set up misusing the name of a genuine firm of solicitors (see below)

The messages that have been sent via WhatsApp are claiming that the genuine solicitor will be contacting the recipient about a confidential matter. The WhatsApp account also misuses an image of the genuine solicitor.

The SRA has been informed that emails have been sent from the following email address 'jeremy.dennison@traverssmith.org'.

The phone number associated with the WhatsApp account is '+44 7920 677013'.

Any business or transactions through the above WhatsApp account or email address is not undertaken by a firm or individual authorised and regulated by the SRA.

Is there a genuine firm or person?

The SRA authorises and regulates a firm of solicitors called Travers Smith LLP. The Head Office is at 10 Snow Hill London EC1A 2AL. The genuine telephone number is 0207 295 3000. The firms genuine email domain is '@traverssmith.com'.

The SRA authorises and regulates a genuine solicitor called Jeremy Dennison (SRA number 141838)

Travers Smith LLP has confirmed that neither it nor Jeremy Dennison have any connection to the above social media account or email address.

What should I do?

When a firm's or individual's identity has been copied exactly (or cloned), due diligence is necessary. If you receive correspondence claiming to be from the above firm(s) or individual(s), or information of a similar nature to that described, you should conduct your own due diligence by checking the authenticity of the correspondence by contacting the law firm directly by reliable and established means. You can contact the SRA to find out if individuals or firms are regulated and authorised by the SRA and verify an individual's or firm's practising details. Other verification methods, such as checking public records (e.g. telephone directories and company records) may be required in other circumstances.
